What NBIS actually does

Nebius Group N.V. (NBIS) is an AI-infrastructure provider that builds and operates data-center capacity, GPUs, power, and the surrounding cloud stack, and sells that compute to AI workloads under long-term contracts.[2] The business emerged in its current standalone form following a divestment transaction completed in July 2024, which clarified the economics of the remaining Nebius operation.[6]

The defining characteristic of the company, by management's own framing, is that it is capacity-constrained, not demand-constrained: in Q3 2025 the company said it "sold out on capacity and our revenue growth was limited only by the capacity that we were able to bring online."[2] In other words, NBIS is racing to convert capital into physical compute fast enough to satisfy a demand backlog it has already secured, most visibly through "mega deals" with Microsoft and Meta that begin serving late in Q4 2025 and ramp through 2026.[2]

Revenue model

The revenue model is best understood as a utility-like, contract-backed compute ramp rather than a quarterly earnings story:

  • Core infrastructure is ~90% of revenue, growing ~400% YoY and ~40% QoQ in Q3 2025, off a small base ($146M group revenue in the quarter).[2]
  • Management steers the business by annualized run-rate revenue (ARR) and contracted power (GW), not by reported quarterly revenue. End-September 2025 core ARR was $551M, with year-end 2025 targeted at $900M-$1.1B, and a long-term ambition of $7B-$9B ARR, "more than half" already booked via existing contracts.[2]
  • Growth is funded by enormous front-loaded capex, raised from ~$2B to ~$5B for 2025, with contracted power set to reach 2.5 GW in 2026.[2] Returns are therefore explicitly rear-loaded: capital goes in now, ARR fills later as capacity comes online and hyperscaler workloads ramp.[2]

The economic engine, then, is operating leverage: if NBIS fills the capacity it is building at target prices, ARR scales dramatically against a largely fixed (already-spent) infrastructure base. The risk is symmetric, under-utilized, debt-and-equity-funded capacity is expensive to carry.

The central tension

NBIS is beating loss estimates while still losing money. Q1 2026 EPS was -$0.33 vs -$0.73 consensus, a ~55% upside surprise, and Q4 2024 was a smaller beat (-$0.3457 vs -$0.39).[5][1] These are beats *against negative expectations*, not signs of profitability. Management guides 2025 EBITDA to stay negative for the full year, crossing breakeven at some point and turning only "slightly positive at group level by year-end."[1][2]

So the tension is this: the contract backlog and ARR trajectory imply a large, profitable business; the current financials show a cash-burning, GAAP-loss-making one. The bridge between the two is execution, delivering ~$5B of capex on time, filling 2.5 GW of power, and ramping Microsoft/Meta workloads through 2026, and that bridge sits in the future, not in any reported quarter.[2]

Why the N/A grade makes sense, and what it cannot capture

A quantitative factor model grades what it can measure: realized profitability, margins, returns on capital, cash generation, valuation against earnings. NBIS offers almost none of these in usable form. Earnings are negative, EBITDA is at or below breakeven, free cash flow is deeply negative by design (capex tripled), and the company's stated key metrics, ARR and contracted power, are not standard financial-statement line items. With a freshly restructured entity (post-July-2024 divestment) there is also limited clean historical series.[6] Faced with negative or unstable inputs across most factors, the engine returns N/A rather than a misleading composite. That is the honest output: there is not yet enough scorable economics to grade.

What the model cannot price is the forward-looking fact that dominates this story: a contract-backed ARR pipeline of $7B-$9B, more than half already booked, with named hyperscaler counterparties.[2] A backlog is not revenue and is not earnings, so it does not enter a backward-looking factor model, yet it is precisely what the market is capitalizing.

This is where the engine's view and the market's view diverge, and the divergence is explainable rather than contradictory. The factor model says, correctly, "the realized economics are not gradeable." The market says, "we will pay today for contracted future ARR and the operating leverage it implies." Both can be right: the model is measuring what *is*, the market is discounting what is *contracted to be*. The gap is the unpriced execution risk, capacity timing, customer concentration in Microsoft/Meta, hyperscaler pricing leverage, and the unspecified financing bridge to fund growth toward $7B-$9B ARR.[2]

The honest bull and bear

Bull case. NBIS has rare demand visibility for an early-stage public company: it is sold out on capacity, has named hyperscaler contracts, and frames more than half of a $7B-$9B ARR target as already booked.[2] Repeated EPS beats suggest the Street underestimates how fast utilization and high-margin long-term contracts improve unit economics.[5] With $2.4B cash at end-2024 and supportive institutional backers, the company is funding an aggressive, demand-led build that, if capacity fills at target prices, produces enormous operating leverage as Microsoft/Meta revenue ramps through 2026.[1][2]

Bear case. This is a capital-destruction risk until proven otherwise: ~$5B of 2025 capex against ~$500-550M of 2025 revenue, GAAP losses, and only "slightly positive" group EBITDA targeted by year-end.[2] The path to $7B-$9B ARR has no disclosed financing bridge, implying likely future equity, debt, or JV raises that could dilute or burden the balance sheet.[1][2] Concentration in two sophisticated hyperscaler buyers creates both customer-concentration and pricing-power risk, and the entire thesis hinges on flawless execution of physical build-out, supply chain, power, and on-time capacity, where slippage directly compresses ARR.[2] No sourced insider, options, or current consensus-target data is available to corroborate sentiment either way.
